Liverpool and Real Madrid will demonstrate the vast global appeal of the Champions League when the Premier League and La Liga giants meet in the final of Europe's most prestigious club competition.

Around 380 million people worldwide are thought to have watched Madrid beat the Reds 3-1 in the 2018 final, when Gareth Bale scored twice and Karim Benzema and Sadio Mane were also on the scoresheet.

UK broadcaster BT Sport reported 4.8 million viewers across digital platforms for its coverage of the all-English final between Liverpool and Tottenham the following season – well on the way to doubling its figures from the previous season.

What time is the Champions League final?

The 2021/22 Champions League final kicks off at 20:00 BST on May 28 2022, although there will be the now-traditional display of festivities beforehand.

The Champions League final opening ceremony returns for a sixth year in the build-up to kick-off at the Stade de France in Paris.

A "high-energy spectacular", the display will include a performance by chart-topping singer Camila Cabello.

"I don't believe in revenge but I do understand it," Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said, responding to superstar striker Mohamed Salah's admission that he is partly motivated by the memory of leaving the 2018 final early through injury. Steve McManaman, who won the Champions League twice with Madrid after starting his career at Liverpool, is likely to be involved again in his regular role as a BT pundit.

Another alumnus of both clubs, Michael Owen, should also be expected in the studio. The England legend won the UEFA Cup with Liverpool in 2000/01 and scored 16 goals in 45 appearances for Madrid in 2004/05.

Liverpool are sweating on a number of injury doubts ahead of the final.

Top scorer Mo Salah and talismanic defender Virgil van Dijk limped out of the FA Cup final a fortnight ago, but both are expected to recover after starting last weekend's 3-1 victory over Wolves on the bench, a game in which Salah came on to score and share the Premier League Golden Boot with Tottenham's Son Heung-min.

Defensive midfielder Fabiano has trained this week and is expected to recover from his muscle injury to play a part. Joe Gomez should also be fit enough to take his place on the bench after an ankle knock.

The biggest concern is midfielder Thiago, who injured his Achilles in the first half against Wolves. The Spaniard's early prognosis is "not good" according to manager Jurgen Klopp, who faces an anxious wait to find out if his conductor will be fit.

Elsewhere, the team picks itself. Klopp's only dilemmas are whether to start Luis Dias or Diego Jota in the front three alongside Salah and Sadio Mane, and who from Joel Mati or Ibrahim Kojate will partner Van Dijk at center-back. Kojate has tended to start in the Champions League but Mati's experience may earn him the nod.

Real Madrid team news

Carlo Ancelotti can choose from nearly a first-choice squad for the Champions League final against Liverpool.

The Italian coach's main doubt is whether defender David Alabi will fit enough to start after missing the past month with a hamstring problem. The Austrian has always seen Paris as his target and has returned to training but his lack of match practice may count against him. Nacho will partner Eder Militia at center-back if Alabi misses out.

Ancelotti's other decision will be whether to start Rodrigo or Fade Valverde down the right flank. The former exploded off the bench to overturn Manchester City in the semi-final but will likely have to bide his time again, with Valverde likely to feature in a narrow right-sided role.

Captain Karim Benzema – two goals from equaling Cristiano Ronaldo's record for most goals in a single Champions League season (17) – Luka Modroc, Dani Carvajal, Casimira, Toni Kroon, Vinicius Junior and Thibaut Courtois will all start.

Gareth Bale has missed the past six weeks with a back complaint but may make the bench, alongside the lesser-spotted Eden Hazard.
