Our Journey
1985
Founding Us Helping Us
Established as a support group for Black gay men living with HIV, providing a safe space for healing and community support during the height of the crisis.
1988
Incorporation of the Organization
Us Helping Us registered as a nonprofit corporation in the District of Columbia. The incorporators included: Bishop Rainey Cheeks, Prem Deben, Aundrea Scott and Howard Morris.
1999
Regional Impact Leader
UHU received its first five-year grant from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to provide HIV prevention activities for Black gay and bisexual men in Washington, D.C., suburban Maryland, northern Virginia and northeast West Virginia.
2005
New Building
We acquired our first building that provided office spaces, meeting rooms and clinical services for our clients at 3636 Georgia Ave in Washington, DC.
2015
Maryland Office Expansion
The DENIM Collection opened as an innovative, culturally appropriate care model that goes beyond traditional primary care by coordinating co-located clinical, behavioral, and social services—including access to nutritious food, case management, and mental health support—for young Black MSM and transgender women (ages 13–34) in the Washington, DC area, recognizing that when basic needs are met, true health and lasting community impact become possible.
2019
Administered our first PrEP Prescription
We introduced our PrEP program offering Descovy and Truvada to our clients.
2023
DC Office Expansion
Thurgood Marshall Center welcomed us to expand our services & has become the primary space for our clinical needs for our clients.
2024
2nd Office Expansion
We expanded our services to Landover, MD, opening a new location to better serve our clients. We also launched the DENIM (Defining & Empowering New Images in ME) drop-in center to support LGBTQ youth.
2026
PrEP Service - Yeztugo now available
We're proud to welcome the every 6 month injectable option for our clients
